Are you struggling with stained, chipped, or otherwise imperfect teeth? Thanks to modern dentistry, you can leave flaws like these in the past! In fact, treatments like veneers and dental crowns have helped millions of patients around the world achieve their smile goals. Despite their popularity, however, many patients aren’t aware of the differences between veneers and dental crowns. Keep reading to learn what they are so you can pick the one that is best for you!

The Main Differences Between Veneers & Dental Crowns

Veneers and dental crowns are both treatments your dentist can use to enhance your smile. With that being said, there are a few distinct differences between the two, including:

  • Tooth preparation – To ensure your veneers aren’t bulky in any way, a sliver of enamel will be removed during the preparation process. On the other hand, as much as 75% of the tooth is trimmed away when a dental crown is placed. For this reason, veneers are typically a more conservative treatment.
  • Placement – Although veneers are comprised of high-quality materials, they usually aren’t placed on molars due to the immense amount of pressure they bear during the chewing process. Therefore, veneers are often recommended solely for the front teeth, and dental crowns are reserved for the back ones.
  • Insurance Coverage – Since veneers aren’t considered medically necessary, they are rarely covered by dental insurance. On the other hand, dental crowns have both restorative and cosmetic benefits, which makes a portion of the cost eligible for coverage.

So, Which One Is Right for You?

Determining whether veneers or dental crowns are right for you is ultimately a decision you’ll make with your dentist. During your initial consultation, your dentist will learn about your smile goals before conducting a thorough dental exam. With this information, they’ll make a recommendation on how to address your concerns in a way that benefits the look and function of your smile. Once you’ve ironed out the details of your treatment plan together, they will review the financial information and you’ll be another step closer to bringing your dream smile to life!
