4 Things You Should Know Before You Get Invisalign

When Invisalign debuted in the late 1990s, it completely revolutionized the field of orthodontics. Though many patients prefer it over traditional metal braces and consider it to be both easier and more convenient, there are a few aspects of treatment that people are often surprised by. To help you avoid any surprises, here are four things you should know before you move forward with getting Invisalign in Lincoln Park.

#1. You Have to Wear Invisalign for 22 Hours a Day

Since Invisalign is removable, many patients think that means they can simply take their trays out during meetings, dates, or anytime they feel uncomfortable or inconvenient. In reality, Invisalign has to be worn for 22 hours each day for patients to stay on track with their treatment timeline. For this reason, they should only be removed when you need to eat and complete your oral hygiene routine.

#2. Invisalign May Cause You to Lose Weight

While getting Invisalign treatment, you may notice a reduction in how much you snack throughout the day because it’s not worth the hassle of taking out your aligners. This reduction in snacking is often referred to as the “Invisalign diet” and can lead to weight loss. To make sure your body has an adequate amount of nourishment, try incorporating protein shakes full of veggies and fats like peanut butter or chia seeds into your meals.

#3. You Need to Brush Your Teeth More Often

Maintaining healthy teeth and gums while wearing Invisalign requires you to brush after every meal to prevent plaque, food particles, and bacteria from getting caught behind your aligners. Avoiding prolonged exposure of these things to your teeth will make you less likely to develop cavities or gum disease. Proper oral hygiene will also help prevent bad breath. Consider keeping a dental hygiene kit with you everywhere you go so you’ll always have everything you need to clean your teeth after eating.

#4. Your Aligners Can Get Stained

Though the transparency of aligners is a big draw of Invisalign, improper care can cause the trays to become stained. This generally occurs as a result of unhealthy habits such as not brushing your teeth often enough or neglecting to clean your aligners daily. It’s important to brush your teeth after each meal, floss in the morning and at night, and remove your aligner trays every time you eat or drink anything other than water to prevent discoloration.

If crooked, misaligned, or gapped teeth are preventing you from praising your pearly whites, consider undergoing Invisalign treatment. Just make sure to keep the above things in mind so you can be on your way to a straighter, more confident smile!
