Sinus Lift
Lincoln Park, NJ

Lobby area by entrance at The Implant Center at Comprehensive Dental in Lincoln Park, NJ A sinus lift is a surgical procedure performed at The Implant Center at Comprehensive Dental to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw. Specifically in the area of the molars. It is also known as sinus augmentation or sinus elevation. This procedure is necessary when there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw to support dental implants.

The sinus lift procedure is recommended for patients who have had bone loss in the posterior maxilla due to periodontal disease, tooth loss, trauma, or aging. When teeth are lost in this area, the bone that once supported the molars deteriorates over time, and leaves insufficient bone mass for implant placement.

Before a Sinus Lift

Before the procedure, we perform a thorough evaluation of the patient's dental and medical history, and perform diagnostic imaging. This allows the team to determine the extent of bone loss, and plan the procedure for the best results for the patient.

Sinus Lift Procedure

A sinus lift procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, but some patients choose sedation. Once the area is numb, we begin with an incision in the gum tissue in the molar region. This exposes the underlying bone and allows access to the sinus membrane.

This space is filled with bone graft material to generate new bone growth through osseointegration, a process where the bone fuses with the graft over time.

The graft has to result in enough growth to accommodate dental implants, which are held in place with osseointegration. The choice of bone graft material depends on factors such as the patient's overall health, bone quality, and surgeon's preference.

Once the material is placed, the incision in the gum tissue is sutured closed, and the healing process begins. Over the next several months, the bone graft integrates with the existing bone, and gradually increases in height and volume in the area where it is needed.

During this healing period, it is crucial for patients to follow the post operative instructions provided by our team. These include taking prescribed medications, avoiding certain foods, and practicing good oral hygiene.

After the area has healed completely, typically four to nine months, the patient undergoes a second procedure to place the dental implants.

During this procedure, the gum tissue is reopened to expose the underlying bone, and the implants are surgically placed into the augmented bone. Once the implants are secured, the gum tissue is sutured closed around the implants, and a temporary restoration may be attached so that patients have functional teeth as they heal.

However, a final, customized restoration will be attached once the patient has healed.
