Contact us for Bone Grafting
Bone loss in the jaw is a common consequence of missing teeth, gum disease, or injury — and it can make dental implants impossible without treatment. At Comprehensive Dental in Lincoln Park, NJ, Dr. Rana performs bone grafting procedures to rebuild lost bone volume and create a stable foundation for implant placement. Most patients are surprised at how straightforward the procedure is and how manageable recovery can be.

Why Is Bone Grafting Needed?
When a tooth is lost, the jawbone that once supported it begins to resorb (shrink) within months. Studies show up to 25% of bone width can be lost in the first year after tooth loss alone. This bone loss can make it impossible to place a dental implant without first restoring the bone volume. Bone grafting rebuilds this lost structure so implants have a solid foundation to integrate into.
Bone grafting may also be needed after:
Tooth extraction (socket preservation graft)
Periodontal disease that has destroyed bone around teeth
Trauma or injury to the jaw
Congenital defects in bone volume
Types of Bone Grafting at Comprehensive Dental
Socket Preservation (Ridge Preservation) is performed immediately after a tooth extraction to prevent the bone loss that normally follows. Graft material is placed into the empty socket at the time of extraction and covered with a membrane, preserving bone volume for future implant placement.
Ridge Augmentation rebuilds the natural contour of the jaw when significant bone loss has already occurred. This restores both the functional bone needed for implants and the aesthetic appearance of the jaw ridge.
Sinus Lift (Sinus Augmentation) is a specialized graft procedure performed when the upper back teeth need to be replaced with implants but insufficient bone exists below the sinus floor. The sinus membrane is gently elevated and bone graft material is placed to generate new bone growth over several months.
Graft Materials Used
Dr. Rana selects the most appropriate graft material based on each patient’s needs. Options include:
Autograft (your own bone)
Allograft (donor human bone, processed and sterilized)
Xenograft (bovine or porcine-derived bone mineral)
Alloplastic (synthetic bone substitute)
In most cases, allograft or xenograft materials work excellently and eliminate the need for a second surgical site to harvest your own bone.
Recovery & Healing Timeline
Bone grafting recovery is typically mild — most patients manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers and resume normal activities within a few days. The graft itself requires 3–6 months to fully integrate before implant placement can proceed. Dr. Rana monitors healing with periodic X-rays and evaluates bone density before scheduling implant surgery.
Is Bone Grafting Covered by Insurance?
Some dental insurance plans cover a portion of bone grafting costs, particularly when performed as socket preservation at the time of extraction. Our team reviews your benefits before treatment and helps you understand all out-of-pocket costs. Financing through CareCredit is available.
